Medical research has come a long way in recent history, leading to the development of new diagnostic modalities and treatment methods that have improved the overall outcome of brain injuries that previously had no option. On the other hand, brain injuries still leave lasting impacts on patients and their families that can carry a large financial, emotional, and legal burden.The Signs and Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injuries
Brain injuries can cause a wide variety of symptoms; however, like many medical problems, brain injuries can range from asymptomatic to causing a wrongful death. Because of this, neurological damage can be difficult to detect. Anyone showing signs or symptoms of brain injuries could seek treatment as early as possible. If patients delay medical attention, it could lead to permanent brain damage or even death. Common symptoms of brain injuries include:
- Headache, including tension headaches, cluster headaches, and migraines
- Difficulty sleeping
- Amnesia, both retrograde and anterograde
- Dripping of cerebrospinal fluid from the head, eyes, ears, or nose
- Bleeding from the skull, nose, eyes, or ears
- Difficulty seeing or hearing
- Fainting or loss of consciousness
- Trouble writing, walking, or standing
- Decreased or total loss of sensation in various body parts

When someone visits a medical provider for diagnosis of a potential brain injury, the visit will start with a history. The physician will ask questions to establish a timeline of the events immediately before and after the accident. This will include the mechanism of the accident, any trauma to the head, and when the various symptoms developed. This timing will help give clues as to the nature of the brain injury. Then, the physician will perform a physical exam that will test the patient’s motor and sensory function to localize and grade the severity of the injury. The doctor will also inspect the face and skull to look for evidence of trauma.Imaging Tests are Necessary
The patient may undergo a variety of imaging tests to look for objective evidence of a brain injury. This includes:
CT Scan: A CT scan is a relatively quick test used to look for bone fractures and brain bleeding in emergent cases. If there is any chance the patient requires emergent care of a severe head injury, a CT scan will be used to quickly rule in or rule out brain bleeding. A patient with bleeding in the brain could require emergent treatment to prevent cerebral herniation.
MRI Scan: An MRI scan takes longer; however, it provides greater detail and does not use radiation to develop its image. This will yield information about not only bone fractures and brain bleeding but could also show any structural damage to the brain tissue itself.
