An Overview Of The Bausch & Lomb Defective Product Status

On April 10th, eye care product maker Bausch & Lomb announced that they will stop shipping their popular contact lens cleaning solution known as the ReNu contact lens solution. The stoppage is due to an epidemic of reports of a rare and serious fungal eye infection tied to the ReNu contact lens cleaning solution.

On February 22nd, 2006, Bausch & Lomb suspended sales of its ReNu contact lens solution in Hong Kong after having suspended sales in Singapore following numerous reports of serious eye infections believed to be from people who used the ReNu contact lens solution.

Unfortunately, Singapore Health Ministry reports that 24 out of 39 people who contracted a hard to treat eye infection since 2005 have used ReNu. Three of them had to undergo urgent corneal transplants.

On April 10th, the Food and Drug Administration and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued warnings to doctors and patients who wear soft contact lenses, alerting them to an increasing number of reports of a rare fungal infection, Fusarium Keratitis, that can lead to permanent vision loss. In some cases, patients with the infection needed a corneal transplant.

As of April 9th, there are 109 suspected cases of the fungal infection in an investigation by CDC in several states. Of 30 cases fully investigated, 28 of the patients wore soft contact lenses. (See FDA Statement at the FDA site).

FDA spokesman Daniel Schultz has stated that there is a very high association between the Bausch & Lomb ReNu Moisture Loc product and the fungal infection.

The fungal infection is known as Fungal Keratitis. Fungal Keratitis is a serious eye infection that can penetrate through the entire depth of the cornea. The infection can require prolonged drug therapy with anti-fungal agents such as Amphotericin B, Natamrycin and Nystatn.

If medication is not accessible and the eye is significantly damaged, surgery is necessary to remove fungal ulcers or lesions. Symptoms of Fungal Keratitis include eye pain, decrease in vision, light hypersensitivity and eye discomfort.
